Portfolio
I work as a manager in a corporate environment, which means that my designs are rarely entirely my own. As a manager I'm most likely to delegate and supervise design work. In those cases where I do act as a designer, I am most often called upon to collaborate, or adapt existing designs, or implement designs provided by others.
That's the down side; the up side is that I have a keen eye for easy maintenance, adaptability, and expandability; I keep my sites well organized and I always write clean code.
In addition to my corporate work, I've done some freelance. In those cases I am the sole designer and developer. I also act as Merchandise and Design Manager for a local non-profit, and in that capacity have variously designed, illustrated, and assisted in producing merchandise and marketing collateral.
Below you'll find some of the work I've been involved in. To separate the very different kinds of work I've done, I've put it into three categories. Click on a thumbnail to view a larger image.
- Corporate (web design)
- Freelance (web design)
- Personal (web design)
- Ads (graphic design for print and web)
- Marketing Collateral (graphic design for print)
Corporate (my role: supervising)
American Banker (and associated sites)
Supervised initial design and coding. Advised on user interface and information architecture. Provided on-the-fly coding corrections during marathon phone meetings to tweak and correct the site. (Note: American Banker is slated to move to a new platform August 1, at which time the design and code will change from what my group built.)

all code and images.

Ads
Chicago Independent Radio Project (CHIRP) Record Fair ads

To advertise the 2009 CHIRP Record Fair, I took a photograph, doctored it with the CHIRP logo, and used it in a number of web an print ads.
Web ads for Credit & Collections World and BondBuyer.com

Early on in my time at SourceMedia, the web design group was occasionally called on to create house ads. Turnaround needed to be very fast, without using stock images. Some examples are to the right.
Marketing Collateral
Button, Postcard, Banner, Tattoo
At the start of the organization, we had no logo, so I doctored a sketch of a bird I had done for use on a button and postcard. Later, when we had a logo, created a banner incorporating both the bird sketch and the logo. Later, I doctored the bird sketch furtherfor a temporary tattoo design. I also did prepress for these items.
Postcard, Poster
As we prepare to launch, we need a new postcard with updated copy and a fresh image. We also need a poster that we can easily print out or photocopy and put up around town. The goal is for people to keep the postcard, and for the poster to be interesting enough to make people stop and take a look at it. The committee I head came up with the idea of a cut-out, fold up radio. Another volunteer provided photographs of a 1980's boombox, which I drew and used in the postcard and poster. I did the prepress for these items, and also edited copy.
Program Guide
Did all illustrations, design, and pre-press. This program guide was designed to fold up into pocket size. The boxes are all skewed at slightly different angles mismatched angles to draw attention away from the fact that at such a small size, the many folds would almost certainly not line up properly.
